In June of 2000 Montebello Fire Department began its Urban Search and Rescue Canine Search Program with the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation. The program began with three canine teams that quickly became certified nationally with FEMA. Montebello quickly has become a national leader in the FEMA and the State of California’s canine search program.
The city of Montebello Fire department’s canine teams are a participating agency with the Orange County Fire Authority’s National Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, which is one of twenty-eight teams responding nationally under FMEA. In addition to the National Task Force the Montebello Canine teams are part of California’s Regional Urban Search and Rescue Task Force as a member of Area E’s Task Force 2.
The Montebello Canine teams have been called upon by state agencies across California as well as the country to serve as the first responders to numerous disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, mud slides, train derailments and building collapses. Whether responding to a major national disaster, or one closer to home, Montebello teams stand ready to serve.
