The Montebello Fire Department formed a Fire Prevention Bureau in the 1940's, resulting in a staff of dedicated personnel with the goals of preventing loss of life and property. Through the years, the Fire Prevention Bureau has been tasked with additional duties and responsibilities, including the enforcement of fire laws, response to hazardous materials incidents, public education, and emergency preparedness.
The Fire Marshal, two Fire Inspectors, an Emergency Services Coordinator, and clerical support provide the fire prevention services to the City of Montebello.
The Montebello Fire Department-Fire Prevention Bureau is responsible for performing plan reviews, as well as inspections for businesses and residences. In addition, the Bureau is responsible for all fire and environmental investigations, and public fire education, to the citizens of Montebello. Annually, the Fire Department performs approximately 3500 inspections, including those performed through the Engine Company Inspection Program. Also, the Fire Prevention Bureau's, Office of Emergency Services provides the City of Montebello, and the local citizenry with emergency preparedness planning.
